What is Moissanite?

Moissanite, first discovered in a meteorite by Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893, is a gemstone that offers a compelling alternative to diamonds. Its durability is exceptional with a hardness rating of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, marginally below the diamond's perfect 10, which makes it highly resistant to scratching and breaking. Moissanite also outperforms diamonds in terms of brilliance, or the ability to reflect light. This gemstone possesses a refractive index from 2.65 to 2.69, which is higher than a diamond's index of 2.42. This results in a "fire" or a rainbow of colors that's even more pronounced than that of a diamond, giving moissanite an eye-catching sparkle.

Moissanite is generally colorless, although some may exhibit a slight yellow or gray tint, particularly in certain lights or if the stones are particularly large. However, the overall color impression of a quality moissanite should still be beautifully clear. This can be comparable to a diamond's color range, which varies from colorless to yellowish or brownish hues, but with a significant price difference. The cost of moissanite is one of its most appealing aspects. It is far more affordable than diamonds, offering a similarly beautiful gemstone at a fraction of the price.

In addition to these benefits, moissanite also has some less-known advantages. Its thermal conductivity is very close to that of a diamond, which makes it one of the few gemstones detectable by thermal testing, often used to differentiate diamonds from their look-alikes.
